Mistakes are opportunities in humanity. Mistakes offer chances for learning, growth, forgiveness, & redemption — all the stuff that good movies are made of. Perfection in play is near impossible & that’s the beauty of it. The Little League World Series may be 1 of the greatest events that displays this. In the Major Leagues, fielding % is around 99%. Way too close to perfect for my liking. In the Little Leagues, as soon as the ball is hit in play, anything is possible. Suspense, drama, & all the elements of interest are present when players & plays are less than perfect. Perfect is predictable.
Experience is a way to expose yourself to your own inadequacies. Faults & failures dwell deep within us all. Some are so deep that you will never know until you get the opportunity to let it show. Get into the game! Only then will you discover the fallacies of your character. It’s alright though. Trying to present yourself as flawless is the greatest flaw of all. All fall short of the Glory of God (Romans 3:23). Finding the way back to grace is every player’s redemption story.
A wise sage once told me “Players fuck up.” This wise sage was a line cook named ‘20’ working the grill at a Hooters & said this after fucking up a hamburger. Wise nonetheless. Keep in mind when you are playing that mistakes are part of the game. ‘20’ quickly recovered from his error & we were back to slinging burgers.
See mistakes through to the end of the game & you’ll tell a better story. The best stories have adversities to overcome. There is no greater enemy than your own stupid self. Defeat this eternally formidable foe, become a legend.
